From recycling to resource management

Urban Mining - Resource recovery

Resource Recovery describes the exploration and characterization of anthropogenic resources. These are, in contrast to the natural resources, all those raw materials which were or are used by people. The majority of anthropogenic resources are found in settlements, infrastructure and long- and short-lived products, which form the so-called anthropogenic stock; a smaller proportion in dumps and landfills. Studies show that the anthropogenic stock has grown substantially in recent decades in industrialized countries and continues to grow. The stock thus contains significant amounts of metals, mineral and organic as well as other raw materials of all kinds. These recyclables are potential resources of tomorrow. The anthropogenic stock must be recycled at optimal levels and the amount of unusable mixtures (special waste) must be stored or destroyed securely.

Urban Mining - Resource recovery

The objectives for resource recovery are:

> Document the existing anthropogenic stock material and describe them in terms of future exploration.

> Design the future stock growth so that future high recovery rates can be obtained from raw materials.

> To develop the methodological and technical bases for the optimal use of resources from the anthropogenic stock.
